Located around the periphery of Kolkata, forty minutes away from Alipore, Rajbari Bawali is a 300-year old palace and heritage property that belonged to the Zamindars. At this eclectic property, life is slow, and the surrounding area is verdant. It serves as a splendid outlet to escape from city life and revel in Zamindari traditions, cuisine and culture.
The Zamindars (traditional landowners) of Bengal lived in a different world from the rest. Their lives were spent amongst riches, splendour and grandiose. The Rajbari Family were one of the extremely wealthy Zamindars of that era with a 400-year ancestry. Rabari Bawali is located in 24 Parganas, a district of great cultural significance for Zamindars.
As the Zamindar era came to an end, the property started dilapidating. However, it was discovered by Ajay Rawla, the current owner, and was painstakingly restored to its former glory.
Rajbari is enveloped by beautiful ancient temples and pukurus or small fish ponds. Kolkata was once the capital of India during the British Raj and it is easy to spot these influences at Rajbari Bawali. The property provides an enriching experience as guests learn about Bengal’s history, culture, folklore and life outside the city.
